Description
Italian Sausage Spaghetti Sauce
Ingredients:
- 1 lb L&S Artisan Meats Italian Sausage (mild or spicy)
- 1 tbsp olive oil (if needed)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (28 oz) whole peeled tomatoes, crushed by hand (or 6-7 fresh tomatoes, peeled and chopped)
- 1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
- 1/2 cup red wine (optional, adds depth)
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp dried basil
- 1/2 tsp dried thyme
- 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
- 1 tsp salt (or to taste)
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp sugar (balances acidity)
- 1/2 cup L&S chicken broth (adjust for consistency)
- Fresh parsley or basil, chopped (for garnish)
- Freshly grated Parmesan (for serving)
Instructions:
- Brown the Sausage: In a large pot or Dutch oven, cook the L&S Italian Sausage over medium heat until browned and cooked through, breaking it into crumbles. Remove and set aside.
- Sauté Aromatics: If needed, add a little olive oil to the pot. Sauté the onion until soft, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
- Add Tomatoes & Tomato Paste: Pour in the hand-crushed whole peeled tomatoes (or fresh chopped tomatoes). Stir in the tomato paste to thicken the sauce.
- Season & Simmer: Add red wine (if using), oregano, basil, thyme, red pepper flakes, salt, pepper, and sugar. Stir in the water or broth to adjust consistency.
- Slow Cook for Depth: Return the sausage to the pot and let the sauce simmer on low heat, uncovered, for at least 30 minutes (or up to 2 hours for a richer taste), stirring occasionally.
- Taste & Adjust: Check the seasoning, adjusting if needed. If the sauce is too thick, add a splash of water or broth.
- Serve & Enjoy: Toss with al dente spaghetti, garnish with fresh basil or parsley, and sprinkle with Parmesan.
