Apple & Caramelized Onion Sausage Flatbread

Ingredients:

  • 1 flatbread (store-bought or homemade, premade pizza crust works as well)
  • 2 Apple & Caramelized Onion Sausages, sliced
  • 1 small apple, thinly sliced
  • ½ cup caramelized onions (see notes)
  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella or gouda cheese
  • ¼ cup crumbled goat cheese or feta (optional)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme (or ½ tsp dried thyme)
  • 1 tbsp honey or balsamic glaze (for drizzling)
  • ½ cup arugula (for topping)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). If using pizza dough, roll it out into a thin flatbread shape.
  2. Cook the sausage: In a pan over medium heat, add olive oil and sauté the sliced sausage until browned (about 5 minutes). Remove from heat.
  3. Assemble the flatbread: Place the flatbread on a baking sheet. Brush lightly with olive oil. Evenly spread the caramelized onions over the surface.
  4. Add toppings: Distribute the sausage slices and apple slices over the onions. Sprinkle with mozzarella (and goat cheese, if using).
  5. Bake: Place in the oven and bake for 10-12 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  6. Finish & serve: Remove from the oven and sprinkle with fresh thyme. Drizzle with honey or balsamic glaze and top with fresh arugula. Slice and enjoy!

Apple & Caramelized Onion Sausage Tart

Ingredients:

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 2 Apple & Caramelized Onion Sausages, sliced
  • 1 small apple, thinly sliced
  • ½ cup caramelized onions (see notes)
  • ½ cup shredded gruyère, gouda, or sharp cheddar
  • ¼ cup crumbled goat cheese or blue cheese (optional)
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves (or ½ tsp dried thyme)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil or butter
  • 1 tbsp honey or balsamic glaze (for drizzling)
  • 1 egg + 1 tbsp water (for egg wash)
  • ½ cup arugula (for topping)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Tart Base

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Roll out the puff pastry slightly and place it on the baking sheet. Lightly score a 1-inch border around the edges (don’t cut all the way through). Prick the center with a fork to prevent puffing.

2. Cook the Sausage

  1. Heat olive oil or butter in a pan over medium heat. Add the sliced sausage and cook until browned (about 5 minutes). Remove from heat.

3. Assemble the Tart

  1. Spread Dijon mustard evenly over the pastry (inside the scored border).
  2. Layer caramelized onions over the mustard.
  3. Sprinkle shredded cheese evenly.
  4. Arrange apple slices and sausage on top.
  5. Sprinkle with thyme and optional goat cheese.

4. Bake

  1. Brush the edges of the pastry with egg wash (egg + water mixture) for a golden crust.
  2. Bake for 18-22 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.

5. Finish & Serve

  1. Let the tart cool slightly. Drizzle with honey or balsamic glaze and top with fresh arugula before serving.
  2. Slice and enjoy!
